The Main Street Subway on the city’s closed list

Here’s a list of businesses in Evanston that have closed since the start of the year, according to the city’s latest Open-Closed business report.

1. Subway, 900 Chicago Ave.

2.  Giordano’s, 1527 Chicago Ave.

3. Zeymart 1828 Dempster St.

4. Semper Laser, 900 Church St.

5. Best Buy, 2301 Howard St.

6. ZenEco (homebased).

7. TBF Diagnostic & Home Health Agency LLC, 2916 Central St.

8. Talia, 1526 Chicago Ave.

In a prime location, Subway has been dark for months. (The owner of the property did not return a call, seeking more details.) The property manager, rmxproperty.com officially confirmed its closing this past week, putting up a For Lease sign, advertising 1,239 square feet available.

Best Buy has been gone since March 1, a huge loss. The company closed a number of traditional stores such as Evanston, a number of news sites reported, changing its approach to business (i.e. driving people on-line or to more profitable stores.)  The city reportedly was in touch with the shopping center landlord and optimistic the space would be filled quickly. That hasn’t happpened. A real estate consultant handling the property didn’t return a call.

People line up outside Guzman y Gomez at 1710 Sherman Ave., on opening day.

The city’s new business arrivals list is longer and includes some real winners, including Guzman y Gomez, part of Steve Rogin’s Varsity Theater redevelopment at 1710 Sherman Ave., and Button Bakery, whose fresh-from the-oven-pretzels can be found at 719 Main St.
