Press Release
EVANSTON, Ill. – Daniel Biss has won the open seat in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press, defeating Republican John Elleson.
Congressman-elect Biss released the following statement:
“Tonight, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to the people of the 9th District for electing me as your next member of Congress. This seat has a long legacy of progressive leadership, and no one can truly fill the shoes of my dear friend and mentor, Jan Schakowsky. But I promise you this: I will fight every single day for our people, our planet, and our values.
“Our country faces serious challenges, many of which predate Donald Trump but have only grown worse because of his disastrous decisions. Families are paying more for everyday essentials like groceries, health care, and child care. Rising housing costs are putting homeownership out of reach for too many people, especially younger buyers. Our climate is in crisis, yet we’re doubling down on fossil fuels. Trump has recklessly led us into war in Iran that is costing American lives, destabilizing the region, and driving prices even higher. And federal agents continue to terrorize our communities and kidnap our neighbors.
“Still, I remain optimistic about our future, because I’ve seen what’s possible here in Illinois. When elected leaders inside government work side by side with advocates organizing in the streets, we win bold, progressive change. Together at the state and local level, we’ve passed groundbreaking climate legislation, protected abortion rights, built affordable housing, and made health care more accessible. Congress has a lot to learn from what we’ve accomplished in Illinois, and I intend to bring those lessons to Washington.
“So here is my pledge: my office will always be open to everyone in this district, whether they voted for me, or someone else, or not at all, to hear your concerns and deliver high-quality constituent services. And I will work with anyone, regardless of party or label, who is committed to building a better future for our families.
“It is a profound honor and responsibility to represent you in Congress, and one I will never take for granted. Now let’s get to work.”
