Non-profit group plans to spend millions upgrading its campus
EVANSTON, ILL (October 9, 2026) – Presbyterian Living, a mission-based, non-profit senior living organization with four Chicago-area communities, has announced it will seek Evanston community input for a long-term campus renewal master plan for its 40-acre Westminster Place senior living community located at 3200 Grant Street in Evanston. Presbyterian Living has served seniors in Evanston for more than 100 years, and this plan will position the organization to continue its mission for the next 100 years.

Presbyterian Living, which welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds, expects to propose a significant investment of more than several hundred million dollars at Westminster Place. The process will begin with gathering input to develop a new campus master plan reflecting suggestions from residents, neighbors and the Evanston community. The investment would replace certain functionally obsolete buildings with new modernized residences and healthcare facilities.
Westminster Place has been ensconced in its unique Northwest Evanston residential enclave since 1922 and is bordered by Golf Road, Lawndale Avenue, Grant Street and Prospect Avenue. Today, the community features 135 independent-living apartments, 102 townhouse/cottages, and 93 assisted-living apartments. The campus also includes close to 300 nursing units between the McGaw Care Center for skilled nursing/rehabilitation and Foster Pavilion dedicated memory support.
As it considers many options for renewal, Presbyterian Living is dedicated to continuing its tradition as a good neighbor and responsible landlord. An important part of that commitment is maintaining the green space it offers the neighborhood, enjoyed by residents, neighbors and Evanston community members alike.
“Our primary goals are to continue to be a caring and thoughtful provider of quality senior living residential and healthcare options in Evanston, be a good neighbor, and be a good steward of the campus,” said Joe Hassel, Vice President of Facilities, Planning, and Construction at Presbyterian Living. “With robust community, staff and resident input, we are excited to explore a wide range of improvement scenarios including considering dynamic new restaurant venues, residences, welcoming community spaces and easier wayfinding and campus navigation.”
Timing and Community Input
The renewal would include multiple phases and would commence in approximately 2030, a strategy designed to minimize construction impact on daily life for residents and neighbors.
To engage the community in the design and planning process, Westminster Place will host the first phase of community meetings in fall 2026, then another round is expected in early 2027. These meetings are intended to gather early input for the design and planning process from residents, neighbors, staff and others in the community. Additional future public meetings are expected to take place later in 2027, following the submittal of resident and community-informed plans to the City of Evanston.
A Historic Investment in Northwest Evanston
Westminster Place already contributes significant property tax revenue to Evanston and Cook County, paying taxes despite its non-profit status. Any significant investment from Presbyterian Living would also increase the value of the 40-acre campus and therefore increase the property tax revenue generated. Westminster Place also contributes to the local economy as a large Evanston employer with roughly 100 of its 350 employees residing in Evanston. Presbyterian Living plans to fund the project with a combination of privately sourced debt and equity.
“All future plans under consideration would include environmentally sustainable, state-of-the-art residences and environments that meet constantly rising resident expectations,” said Nadim Abi-Antoun, President and CEO of Presbyterian Living. “Updates to buildings and site infrastructure are needed both to offer modernized healthcare spaces and to protect our residents’ financial investment. Because only one-third of Westminster Place buildings are newer than 50 years old, we are evaluating which of the older buildings have passed their useful lives, and how to use this historic opportunity to improve our campus environment.”
Presbyterian Living has engaged a team of experts to help the project move forward efficiently and effectively, including Integrated Development II (development advisor); Perkins Eastman (architecture); Lakota Group (master planning); MK Development Advisor (entitlements expert); DLA Piper (attorneys); and Akrete (public relations).
