An upbeat Ann Rainey, whose public service in Evanston dates back to 1983, officially filed Friday to run in the special election for Evanston’s mayor, likely a Feb. 23 primary.
Rainey said she gathered many of her signatures outside of Valli Produce, where she also shops.
In turn, “I thanked every one of them (petition signers) for shopping in Evanston,” she said.
The longtime alderman of the city’s south side 8th Ward, Rainey nearly won the city’s mayoral seat in 1993, narrowly losing to Lorraine H. Morton.
Candidates have been filing papers this week to run in the election to fill out the remaining two years of Daniel Biss’s term. Biss officially stepped down this week to concentrate on his race for the 9th District Congressional seat where he is a heavy favorite.
